“So how’d your little talk go?”
Alice was sitting on the couch, legs curled underneath her, with a notepad in her lap. She was writing down music and choreography ideas, for them as a team and for Christian by himself. “It went well,” she said, chewing on the pencil’s eraser thoughtfully.
Christian looked at her over a glass of water. “What’s that mean?”
She stopped with the pencil. “Natalia said she’d coach us,” Alice said, “but I don’t think she ought to coach you. We talked about music, choreography, what we want to do this season. I said we’d like to do something different, since we’ve won everything, so now it’s more…personal, as opposed to us wanting to get a bunch of titles and so on as we’ve got those now.”
“Sounds good.” Christian hadn’t wanted to go see Natalia. Alice was better with people. Whereas she was nearly always in a good mood, talking to someone he barely knew put him in a bad one and he ended up being rude or quiet or both if you thought being quiet was rude which most people did.
“We were talking music. Romeo and Juliet, different versions… We could use Prokofiev, Rota, Tchaikovsky--” Alice noticed Christian’s less than interested expression. “What are you looking at me like that for?”
“Romeo and Juliet?” Christian sounded mildly alarmed. He set the glass down on the coffee table and sat down next to Alice, reaching over to put a palm to her forehead. “You’re alright, not sick or anything? Romeo and Juliet?” He was being sarcastic of course.
“Stop it.” She swatted at his hand. “Go away if you’re going to be a jerk. Yes, Romeo and Juliet, what’s the problem?”
There were a million problems! “It’s so…overdone.” That sounded lame. “Cliché for a pairs team. I don’t want to skate to that.”
“And I do.”
He looked at her evenly. “That means I can’t complain, right?”
Alice smiled sweetly. “Exactly.”
“Women.” Christian got elbowed in the side quite hard for that one.
