The music ended. They were both on their knees, at angles from each other, Christian’s hands on her thighs while hers were cupping his face lightly. Amongst the roar of the standing ovation, they just looked at each other, exhausted from their skate and triumphant in their knowledge that they did the best they could.
Alice cracked a little smile. She moved, sitting up straighter, while Christian’s hands found her shoulders and he gave her a gentle kiss on the forehead. Usually they kept such physical affections towards one another at a minimum, not wanting the world to know about their personal life.
The two of them got up at almost the same time. They hugged, Christian rubbing her back, and in that moment between pulling away from her to ostensibly take their bows together he got an idea. It was something he’d been thinking about for a long, long time, and although their relationship was not public knowledge, he figured it was about time it was. He was just holding one hand, and then when he began to settle down on one knee right there on the ice in front of the audience of about 6500, he took her other hand.
She just looked really, really confused and then momentarily panicky. He didn’t say anything, just looked up at her, squeezing her hands. The time he was on one knee in front of her was brief. He got his answer in the very small smile, the way she squeezed his hands right back, the gentle movement of her arms as she tried to hoist him up. It signaled for him that she’d said yes…and that he should get up before he make a further fool of himself.
The audience, in the midst of their post-performance cheering and so on, were generally confused by the action. They probably thought it was just him being cute, thanking her in a way, since who knew if they’d be back next year?
In the manner befitting a gentleman Christian kissed Alice’s hand and they stroked closer to center ice to take their bows together. It was at least another five minutes before they began to move off the ice, and although he’d hugged her before from the side when they were going to the kiss and cry, Christian wrapped an arm around her shoulder, held her tight as they just glided together, and he kissed the side of her head. She patted his hand and, once they were close enough, began chatting animatedly to Natasha as if nothing had happened, as if he hadn’t asked her, if it was all still top secret. But for once it didn’t really bother him.
