It was one in the morning on New Year's Day at the Potemerenko household. Evgeni sat at the kitchen table with his wife, Irina. The two had seperated in mid-October, but were celebrating New Year's together for the sake of their son, Miroslav, and daughter, Margarita. The children had been in bed since twelve-thirty, as did Evgeni's mother, Maria.
"I want to thank you for letting me celebrate with you tonight. I had a wonderful time," Evgeni said.
"Zhenyechka, this is your house. The deed is in your name. You are always welcome here... I wanted you here, not just for the kids, but for me. I missed you. You have no idea how much," Irina said, sipping some more champagne.
"I misssed you too." He sighed. "It's good to be home. I'm glad that we agreed to get back together. A New Year means a new beginning, and I'm happy that we agreed to have a new beginning with us."
"I was rash in October... We both were. But you're right, the seperation did have its good aspects. It made me miss and love you even more. It's good to have you back."
Evgeni sipped his champagne, and chuckled. "Do you think it's what Rita and Slava wished for when we broke the plate?" he asked, referring to an age-old Russian New Year tradition where a plate was smashed and everyone took a piece and hid it where it could not be found, making a wish. If the piece was never found, the wish would come true.
"I wouldn't be surprised, love. They love us when we're together, and no doubt it's harder than they make it out to be when we're apart. But you do agree that there has to be some changes made, right?" she asked. Evgeni set his glass down and nodded.
"I do. We've talked a lot about this previously, and I talked about it with others, and we need to be there for each other, have some more time alone together. How would you like to go to New Zealand in April? For a month?"
Irina smiled. "New Zealand, again? Well, it would be amazing. There was so much that we missed out on before. I'd love to go to that island to swim with the dolphins... Are you sure the kids will be all right without us?"
"Mama and Danil and Peter can look after them. They'll be fine," he assured her."
"And to see Doubtful Sound, I'd love to spend some more time there. And Milford Sound as well. My God, that was so amazing last time. No doubt you want to see where the Lord of the Rings was filmed," Irina added with a wink. Zhenya laughed.
"Well, this is for us. Bonding time. So no, not this time. This time, just like our honeymoon, will be devoted to being together. Nothing like that."
Irina smiled. "All right. I can't wait. In the meantime, how will things be between us?" she asked.
"I promise to leave work at home more often. Only if something is really troubling me will I bring it up during my time with you," Zhenya pledged. Irina lowered her eyes.
"I don't know about that..."
"Ira, I promise-"
"No, dear. I mean, I don't know if I want you to do that. You talk about work only if there's something really wrong? I have been thinking a lot about this. It's wrong that I felt neglected. It's not as if you were that awful to me. I want our family to come first and foremost with you, unconditionally. But I don't want to be left out of your work either. I don't want you to let work overshadow me like before, but I do want to be involved. I've thought a lot about this, and I've come to a decisikon. Would you like me to work with you? As a coach?"
Zhenya stared at her. "Ira... I don't know what to say..."
"Masha can care for Slava and Rita while we're gone. They're old enough. What do you think?"
Zhenya stared at her for the longest time, and finally clutched her hand. "Are you sure that is what you want, Katyusha?" he asked.
"Absolutely, without a doubt. So what do you say, angel?"
"I think it's brilliant!" He kissed her hand, then stood up and moved closer to her so he could kiss her lips passionately. "Thank you. Anytime you want to quit, you can. I think it's a brilliant idea, and I'm glad you thought of it."
"Let's go upstairs, get some sleep," Ira continued with a wink. Zhenya grinned, and the two went upstairs.
