It was June in Japan, a season of all-too hot weather, and yet ironically a time when Japan was still not yet at its hottest. It had been one year since Kyo's return to Japan from America, and though he'd never really fully adjusted from his life abroad back to his original lifestyle in Japan, he'd managed to cope fine. He had aspirations of returning back to the country across the sea one day, whether on business or even just for "long-term" leisure--he had too many good friends there--but of course he knew it was important for him to finish up his school as best as he could in Japan. This was his last year in secondary school before it was time for entrance examinations and college. It was quite a bit of pressure.
But one reason why Kyo had been happy to return to Japan was to see Nobu. Sasaki Nobu, a kid who had been in his classes right from primary school until now, and a kid who had always shared Kyo's enthusiasm for "things foreign." Even though Kyo missed his life in America, he'd been all too happy to tell his best friend in Japan about what had gone on there.
In Kyo's mind, Nobu led a kind of ideal lifestyle. He wasn't supremely rich or anything like that, but he had a very relaxed nature, a comfortable-seeming life, and he lived in the middle of Roppongi, the area in Tokyo well-known for its large foreign population and entertainment areas. Odaiba was nice enough too, but Kyo had always been envious of the fact that Nobu lived in a place in Tokyo where he could converse with foreigners any time he wanted. And of course Roppongi was a place for people of prestige to live in, a place close to the most important areas of Tokyo. Kyo's home in Odaiba was a bit of a ride from most everything, in comparison.
Even so, Kyo had always taken the opportunity to spend time with Nobu not because of where he lived, but because the other boy really was--aside from Nic and Danil, Alexander and all his other friends in America--like the brother he'd never had. And they'd been on plenty of their own adventures together in Japan. That was another thing to associate with the famed Roppongi--the.........interestingness of some of the people there.
Kyo and Nobu had finished up with classes for the day and were headed home, piles of homework on hand. Kyo had taken off his school blazer and rested it over the messenger bag he had slung over his shoulder. The weather had really become too much, and he was beginning to wonder when the school would permit the students to switch to their summer uniforms.
Kyo watched a group of Japanese college girls stroll by and shook his head. "I still don't understand why our school is in the middle of an all-female college campus. I mean, I'm not complaining or anything, but I'm not so sure those girls aren't." He thought about a particularly nasty kid in their class, a student whose family actually came from Britain, who liked terrorizing other students and graffity-ing up the entire building. He seemed to only get away with it so often because his parents paid so much money for him to attend the school.
Not that he actually attended, considering half the time he was absent from class, probably off gallivanting and making trouble somewhere.
"And you know, I don't know why we don't have a closer campus to home. It's not like Setagaya-ku is a huge part of Tokyo. Maybe many people live there, but what about the people near Narita? It would take them over an hour to commute here every day," Kyo went on, wrapping his hands around the strap of his school messenger bag. The thing was suddenly a terrible weight on his shoulder, it was so full of textbooks. Truth be told, he liked English and he liked English literature, but he didn't like the physical weightiness of the materials they were meant to study both subjects from for the school. He'd always wondered if it was an expected thing for the students to be hunched over like elderly folk by the time they graduated, after having lugged around so much weight.
Kyo donned his trademark pout. "And I miss the American weather. A lot. It was much colder than here, never got as hot as fast as Tokyo..." He wiped a hand across his sweaty brow. "Can't take it...."
Kyo suddenly stopped walking in his tracks. A small grin actually crossed his face as he realized the nature of the entire one-sided conversation he'd just had. "Nobu...did I really just spend that entire time whining at you?"
