It was late, but there was one last freestyle session open to the skaters and Jamie was taking advantage of it. Here he didn't have to worry about work or stress or spending yet another hour at the office. Here he could relax as he just stroked around, doing something just for the fun of it. He figured he was alone, the only person hanging around, except maybe the poor kid at the front desk who got stuck with the boring evening shift.
Mesuni didn't have the best day on the ice. Parker wasn't pleased with her skating and to be honest neither was she. She spent her afternoon hiding from Parker and decided to catch the freestyle ice time. She didn't expect alot of people to be there, and she was right. Only a few people were hanging around. She quickly put on her skates and took to the ice. "Stupid triple flip!" she mumbled to herself.
As he turned the Lutz corner, Jamie spotted someone on the other side of the ice surface, stepping on and looking quite cranky. He didn't know who she was, but itdidn't surprise him. It wasn't as if he was at the rink so often that he'd know most people. Briefly he wondered if he should say something to her as he made his way to the other side of the ice. "Didn't expect to see anyone else here," he commented, his hands clasped behind his back as he skidded to a stop, trying to be friendly.
"Huh, what, oh..." Mesuni was lost in destroying that jump that haunted her dreams when she heard someone speak to her. "I figured no one else would be here either..." LAME. "Can I ask you something?" She didn't wait for a reply. "Does anyone really ever NEED to do a triple Flip?" She hoped he knew what that was as opposed to him just being some creepy older man on the ice for shits and giggles.
Well, she was...feisty. He wasn't sure if he was amused or taken aback by all the talking. "I doubt the judges would like it much if you stopped doing it," said Jamie lightly, with a shrug. "At least you don't have to do quads, or a triple axel, right? Those were my nemesis jumps. Can't do them anymore, I guess I'm too old."
Mesuni looked at his face. "You're not old." She said offhandedly. "I would rather train a quad toe... At least I know I have a 50/50 chance of landing it. With the flip... Who knows," she threw her hands in the air. "You know you could probably land a triple axel still. When was the last time you landed one?"
"Probably considerably older than you," Jamie said, his smile a little crooked as if he were going to laugh. "A triple Axel? You know... I don't even remember. A few years ago, most like. I quit competing five years ago. It was always quite dodgy." So I had Jamie go, Well, I thought I had the in-laws from hell when I was married, I guess you got me beat there!
"Age is a relative term," Mesuni rolled her eyes. He didn't appear to be that much older. "My brother says the key to the triple axel is the step up, I say it's the speed. I've never landed a triple axel so my brother is probably right. Can you do a double axel?"
Jamie nodded. "Your brother is wise in the ways of the triple Axel," he said, wondering who she was and why he hadn't introduced himself or vice-versa. "I can do a double. Maybe, if I'm lucky." For a moment he thought about teasing, talking about how he could still do a triple flip, but he certainly didn't know her well enough to feel comfortable doing that. His brothers, friends, they were fair game for teasing. This girl he just met? No way.
Mesuni laughed, like a real laugh. Mesuni Heawg did not giggle. "Ah, so the axel is the problem! But pulling off a double axel is still more impressive than a big ol' double flip." She teased herself. "So do you have a name Axel man?" She asked as she felt herself getting shy or just quiet... Awkward Silence!
"Axel-man?" he echoed, smiling at her. "I quite like that. James Abbott, but call me Jamie or else I may think you're slightly mad at me. It's a pleasure to meet you...?" Jamie trailed off, not knowing if he ought to shake her hand or not. It seemed too businesslike.
"Mesuni Heawg," she replied. She extended her hand toward him for a proper introduction hand shake. Now she knew his name she was sure she had watched him skate. "You work here don't you? With the kids?" She sometimes liked to watch the children skate.
"Yeah, sometimes. On weekends," Jamie explained as he shook her hand. "Sometimes with my daughter, though she's only four and can barely even stand on skates let alone do anything else." He smiled.
“How cute!" Mesuni said with a smile. "My mother tells everyone I started skating when I was three, but I don't actually remember doing anything special, like not falling all the time, until I was eight. Shocking but true." Mesuni always talked too much.
Surprised she didn't say much of anything on the subject of his having a kid (which some people did, Jamie didn't know why), he just let her talk. It was cute. "I don't think any little kids can do anything special at that age except stand around and look cute or drive their parents mad. I was seven when I started skating. I don't remember much, but it was twenty one years ago."
"That doesn't prove that you are old, I started skating sixteen years ago. My mother was determined to have an Asian skating baby, though she really couldn't help the Asian part..." Out of nowhere Mesuni skated in front of Jamie and peeked around him like he was a tree. "Oh gosh, I thought that was my coach!"
Asian skating baby made him chuckle, but when Mesuni turned around to hide behind him, he just looked confused as he glanced down at her and then to where Mesuni was looking. "Oh, you're on your own, kid," Jamie said, stepping out of the way because he sure recognized Parker. "He's your coach, eh?"
"Traitor," Mesuni scowled at Jamie. "Yes he's the sadist that expects me to do a triple flip in combination..."
"If you're on the ice I assume that means you want to work," Parker said to Mesuni. He wasn't known for being a mean coach, but Mesuni was a special case. "Hey Jamie."
"Hey Jamie? Great, everyone knows my coach. Yes, I was working. I'm thinking quad toe!"
"I'm thinking no," Parker replied, laughing when she actually hissed at him.
"Yeah. Long time no see," Jamie said, smiling at Parker, glancing to Mesuni, amused at their exchange. "I ought to get out of your way then. I'm not doing anything important."
"No!" Mesuni actually did scream. "Parker, Jamie said he wants to land a triple axel again before he's too old to even try! Teach him!" Mesuni was smiling, she was joking.
"Jamie, if you want to work on your axel, you know where to find me. Mesuni, I am far more concerned with your triple flip... Don't huff. Come on, if you want to work, lets work." He clapped his hands together twice, which for some reason always annoyed Mesuni. "Let's go before you're too old to land a triple flip and I'm too old to care."
Mesuni shot him a dirty look and began skating around.
"She a little intense, I should have said I'd coach her brother," he said to Jamie.
"You land a triple flip, I'll try a triple axel, how's that?" She seemed to be one who'd be up for a bet, Jamie thought. "And when I fall on my arse, you two would be free to laugh all you want."
Looking to Parker, making sure Mesuni wouldn't see, he added, "Poor you," but he was on the verge of laughing at the poor man's fortune to be coaching Mesuni.
"Deal!" She shouted as she blazed past them.
Parker gave Jamie a look that said: you have no idea. "Okay, watch your edge, hold it. Reach back, check your shoulders..."
"Enough!" Mesuni scowled, winding back around to do her jump right in front of them. She launched herself into the jump, three tight turns, and much to her own surprise, she landed it. She actually patted herself on her back as she skated toward Parker and Jamie.
"Great job, now why can't you do that in practice?" Parker looked at Jamie. "Maybe you should sit in on all Mesuni's practices..."
"Shut up." Mesuni rolled her eyes. "You're up Axel man." "I just think she wanted to show off." Jamie made a face at the idea of having to actually try a triple Axel. "Well. Let's see how this goes. I've not done it in a few years." Partially because he expected to fall, he wasn't going to really speed up into it. It would make the crash more painful. He did some back crossovers away from them, picking up speed easily (because skating skills were his thing, and not jumps), and turned, readying himself for the set-up. He did all three and a half rotations, but of course fell flat on his ass. Damn, those falls hurt. He almost forgot about how much it hurt.
Parker let out a little chuckle, but was quickly swatted in the arm by Mesuni.
"Are you okay?" Mesuni skated over to him, holding out a hand. "Falling sucks. It looked good in the air, if that makes you feel any better."
Jamie didn't need any help to get up, damn it! He hoisted himself up, eyeing Mesuni before telling her, "There, now you can laugh at me, you've got my permission. And no, it doesn't make me feel better. It hurt."
"I wouldn't laugh. Falling isn't funny," Mesuni replied thoughtfully. "Popping a jump is funny..." She added with a little half smile.
"I'm surprised you're not laughing." Jamie kind of wanted to wipe all the ice he was sure that covered his butt, but it wasn't polite. "Ice is cold and it hurts, you can laugh if you want. At least you landed your flip."
"I did land my flip didn't I," Mesuni said proudly. "But he'll only expect me to do it more often," she jerked her head in Parker's direction. "Just between you and me, has Parker always been this sick?" She whispered loudly.
Pursing his lips in an effort to laugh, it failed, and Jamie laughed at her. She was funny, or he was just easily amused. Probably both, but the stage whispering was funny, considering he knew damn well Parker could hear it. "Yes," he said, adopting a serious face. "Always. Just so you know now."
"I thought as much," Mesuni replied nodding her head as she heard her coach approach. "He's mean to me." She said to Jamie as if she fully expected him to do something about it.
"I'm only mean when you don't work hard," Parker said in his own defense.
"I work hard on everything else, I just not the flip." Mesuni retorted.
"You should be working twice as hard on your flip!"
"There's no point in talking about this in mixed company," Mesuni said in a frustrated tone. She really did like her coach. "You have ice on your butt." She said to Jamie before skating away and spinning.
"She's like that all the time." "Telling people they've got ice on them?" Jamie asked, acutely aware of the fact considering he was rather cold. "That's why I don't jump any longer. Too cold." He glanced over to Mesuni, watching her layback spin. "I don't blame her for not wanting to work on it. It's frustrating."
”No just a little random and... special," Parker joked. "It's only frustrating because that one jump is her only real weakness," Parker shook his head. "She's used to being cute and getting her own way, her former coach’s words not mine."
"Why is it that coaches are always easy on the girls and not so on the boys? I never got away with anything." Jamie's complaining was good-natured. "Not like I'd have been mouthy to my coach. I was afraid of him."
"Because girls are supposed to be sweet and good natured... She... not so much," Parker laughed. "Girls are supposed to be soft and pretty and flowers and whatnot. She's a cactus. I mean that in a good way."
Looking at Parker, Jamie chuckled. "A cactus. I'll have to remember that if I ever run into her again, though God knows I've known plenty of women like that who are worse."
"She's a good girl," Parker laughed. "She doesn't judge others or laugh at their mistakes, unless it's her brother..." Parker was happy to be her coach.
"Stop talking about me, it's annoying!" Mesuni said as she came out of her spin. "Cactus? Really?"
"A rose with thorns maybe? Because it sounds nicer than a cactus but it could give one the same idea," Jamie said innocently to Mesuni.
"No thank you. Roses smell like poo. I'll be a cactus," Mesuni replied with an airy huff.
Parker nearly choked on his laughter.
"Well, then, a cactus suits you," Jamie said, also trying not to laugh but he was smiling. "I should go. You two have things to do and... I don't, but I don't want to interrupt any actual coaching here."
"Coaching? Bah!" Mesuni scowled. "I'm leaving too."
"No, we've still got work to do. Don't whine," Parker could feel a temper tantrum coming. "Talk to you later Jamie."
Mesuni smiled at Jamie and waved as he skated away. "I want ice cream," she pouted since he had the gall to accuse her of whining.
