Biography: Alexander Dupont is the son of Gaetan, a French doctor and former tennis star, and Anna, the legendary Russian ballet dancer. He began skating when he was four years old, and caught the eye of coach Phillipe Rampal, whom felt that the youngster had tremendous potential. His parents insisted that Rampal take time to develop strong basics, while at the same time allowing their son to simply enjoy himself on the ice. As a result, he developed slowly, only beginning to perform double jumps at the age of 9. However, the careful pacing of his development would result in huge dividends. Instead of rushing to learn elements, he was allowed to master stroking and edge work, as well as artistry and musicality, which gradually developed into his speed across the ice, and secure jumps and spins. Three years later, at the age of twelve, elements such as the triple Axel, and triple - triple combinations were well mastered, the end result being a surprise world junior title, before disappearing from the international scene.
This was due to politics. Sasha's coach had been at odds with Benoit Richard, an official in the French figure skating federation, and had resulted in the loss of some international assignments. However, disappointing results by his teammates, and intense pressure by other members of the French federation forced Richard to relent. In his first competitive season as a senior, Sasha exceeded the expectations of many, winning his first world title, as well as a number of medals on the Grand Prix series.
Anything else:
- On March 1, 2005, Sasha's life-long wish of finding his soul mate came true when he married long-time friend Svetlana Kolesnikova. The two plan to start a family in the near future.
- Sasha is a bit of a hopeless romantic in large part due to the story of his parents finding true love with each other. This has often gotten him into trouble in the past, as a number of women have used this to take advantage of him.
- Sasha is the first skater to successfully perform three different types of quadruple jumps in one program, as well as the quadruple Lutz, flip, loop, and triple Axel - quadruple toe loop combination.
- Although Sasha does not currently compete, he continues to actively train should he wish to make a comeback and maintains his full level of technical difficulty. He and his wife Svetlana are already regarded as one of the greatest duos of all time and regularly perform as soloists with ballet companies around the world, as well as give master classes at various universities and schools.
