Danil nodded slowly. "Well, Kyo, I think you showed good judgment in telling me about the button. Do you have it?" When Kyo pulled it out and showed it to him in response, he nodded. "We'll sew it on when we get home. It's nothing to worry about. And the cashier didn't even notice, thankfully." The 21-year-old smiled gently at Kyo. "You certainly have come to know me well. I was going to say that this is our treat to you. But if you want, you most certainly can pay for yourself. Oh, the word you're looking for, by the way, is 'obligation.'" He said the word slowly, stretching out the syllables so that Kyo could get a handle on them. He grinned and patted his back as they walked over to where the lockers were. Peter was on his way back to the store, so they met in the middle. "Hey!" Danil said happily, kissing his husband. The kiss was audible enough, and the two embraced.
"Excuse me," a woman said as she tried to come between them, though she could just as easily have gone around them. She was pushing a heavy stroller and a little boy of about five or six was next to her. Peter moved away to give her room to pass between them, then rolled his eyes.
"I guess there's no room over on that side," he said, loudly and annoyed enough to make sure he was heard. The woman made no response. Peter rolled his eyes and went back to join Danil and Kyo. "What a bitch."
"Peter," Danil scolded, though it was plain that he, too, was disgusted. Unfortunately, they were heading in the same direction as the woman. "American manners," Danil said to Kyo as they passed her. "I'm sad to say that some of them are like that. You may meet some in your school who are... If any of your classmates bullies you, you come to us, understand?" he asked as they turned to enter the mini-golf course. Peter met them a minute later, after dropping off Kyo's clothes at the lockers.
"Boy, I tell ya, after that I feel the need to club a few balls," Peter joked crudely. Danil gasped and stared at him, slapping his cheek lightly.
"Don't!" Danil said, though he was trying to keep a straight face.
"Don't you don't, that felt good, do it again," Peter replied coyly. Danil lost it and laughed.
"Come on, let's get our stuff..."
"Yeah, let's get our clubs and balls!"
Danil blushed and glanced at Kyo. "You'll have to excuse him. Sometimes his brand of humor is..."
"Ball-bustingly good!" Peter proclaimed. Danil nudged him hard in the stomach. "Ow!"
"Will you please?" he asked, rolling his eyes.
"Sorry," Peter apologized, particularly to Kyo. Whether he got the humor or not, he still didn't need to hear it, as naive as the kid seemed.

Kyo couldn't help grinning at Danil's words. "Maybe you are the type they say wears a heart on his sleeves, like people always know what he is feeling. One of the good guys." Kyo winked, then spent the remainder of the minutes it took for them to reach Peter at the lockers practicing the word "obligation" which he'd failed at both times he'd tried to say it. This was why he'd come here, though. To learn. At least he would be able to go back to Japan and seek a serious career that needed English speakers, without having to fear having the bad English that many supposed "English-speaking employees" were said to have anyway.
Kyo had just gotten to thinking about his career, something that scared him even despite the fact that it was still some years away, what with him still in high school and all, when Danil announced a loud hello to Peter, pulling him into an actually audible kiss. Kyo didn't really have much of a chance to react anyway, because just as soon as the kiss had begun, it was nearly ended. A snide, annoyed-looking women pushed her way through the embracing pair with a loud, "Excuse me!", dragging a little boy along with her and the stroller she was pushing.
Peter was the first to react. "I guess there's no room over on that side," he retorted loudly.
Mrs. Rude paid him no mind, just kept going on her not-so-merry way.
"What a bitch."
Danil scolded Peter for what he'd said, but Kyo waved a hand to gesture it was okay. He knew what that meant, but he could understand Peter's frustrations and figured the lady must have known she deserved some kind of "mean name" after her gross interaction with his two host fathers. In fact, Kyo actually did a double blink, moving around his caretakers to glimpse the otherwise wide open path the woman could have taken had she been uncomfortable with plowing right through another group of people like any other normal, decent person would. In fact, Kyo couldn't figure out what had been going through the woman's mind having done what she did. Not only was there far more space just next to Danil and Peter, but if she'd been so "sickened" seeing them kiss, why didn't she avoid it instead of breaking it up? What right did she have breaking it up? Kyo felt annoyed. He sometimes got embarrassed when his host fathers kissed, only really because he felt like he was intruding on something personal between them--heck, he got embarrassed even when his parents or friends who were dating kissed--not because he had some kind of bone to pick like that woman obviously had.
"I'm sad to say that some of them are like that."
Kyo looked up. Danil was speaking to him again.
"You may meet some in your school who are... If any of your classmates bullies you, you come to us, understand?"
Kyo pondered the words carefully, though he nodded. The first person who'd come to mind at Danil's words had been Alexander Rhoades. Though strangely enough, Kyo didn't get the feeling his classmate was a bully so much as....well, he didn't want to say dumb. Maybe overenthusiastic? And about bullying....well, he hoped it didn't happen. It happened a lot in Japan and pretty badly too, but Kyo didn't get the feeling American school could be worse. Unless he was singled out for being foreign or misunderstood someone at the wrong time or something. Truth be told, he knew Danil had been serious about him letting him know if he was ever bullied, but it was extremely embarrassing and--not that he wanted to be old fashioned, but it was true--really dishonorable--to have to admit to something like that. Kids in Japan who went through the worst of it usually committed suicide because they couldn't bear to tell their families. Of course Kyo had never experienced anything like that, but.....
"Boy, I tell ya, after that I feel the need to club a few balls," Peter said suddenly, receiving a quick slap from his partner.
Kyo's eyes widened. The two went back and forth for a moment more, obviously joking around with each other. Kyo got the reference, at least the ball part, though he figured he could venture a good guess about clubs too, but he didn't say anything. Poor Danil seemed embarrassed.
"You'll have to excuse him. Sometimes his brand of humor is..."
"Ball-bustingly good!" Peter exclaimed, receiving an elbow thrust into his gut as a response.
Kyo had to bite his lip to keep from laughing. Even when Peter apologized, he was still smirking. "It's okay." Though.....He glanced back towards the direction the angry woman had gone in. She couldn't be all that far ahead of them, and if she hadn't been happy with the two men kissing, how would she take some obviously crude jokes?
Looking back to his caretakers, Kyo nodded his head in the direction the woman had gone. "I think maybe it would be best not to make jokes so much now. You never know. Maybe that mean lady will really come back around with a club and...." He mimicked someone golf-clubbing someone else in the groin, then made a cringing face. "Uwaaa......that is a scary thought."

Peter couldn't help it. He laughed at Kyo, who looked like he'd just eaten a raw lemon. "You got a point," he said as he snickered. "Come on." The two came close to the woman again, now joined by a buff guy in jeans and a tank top. He looked like he could bench 350 easily. The woman said something inaudible and gestured towards Peter and Danil, and the man burst out laughing.
"Don't let 'em get to ya, babe," the man said as he put his arm around her. "They're all over the place like cockroaches- or should I say, cock-sucking roaches." The two started walking away, the woman laughing along with him.
"Peter, do not-" Danil began, but Peter put his hand in front of his chest as the three of them stopped walking. Peter watched as the family kept walking in front of them, commenting loudly on the two of them. They turned left in the direction of the food court, and Peter and Danil sighed simultaneously.
"Come on," Peter said, and they turned right towards the entrance of the miniature golf course.

Kyo smirked at Peter's response. He might not have been anywhere near Peter in age or ability to joke well (or handsome, for that matter, at least in his own opinion), but he'd made him smile in a language that was just his second. He liked the way Peter laughed too.
"You got a point."
Kyo nodded.
"Come on."
Kyo followed his caretakers around the corner of the area to where the woman had disappeared, only to run into her once more, though this time she wasn't alone. Kyo took one good moment to just study the new addition to the lady's team of rude people. He didn't look so spiffy either, the man who had joined her. Dressed in a kind of American style Kyo attributed to overly-tough guys who never meant anything good, he was in dirty jeans, a tank top, and carrying around a pair of arms that looked so heavy that it was a wonder how he was still upright, the muscles were so thick.
Kyo had barely finished oggling the man, sort of taken aback by the size of the guy's arms, when the woman said something to him and the two broke into laughter. Kyo knew who they were laughing about instantly.
"Don't let 'em get to ya, babe. They're all over the place like cockroaches- or should I say, cock-sucking roaches."
As the two started walking away in the style a popular celebrity couple might, Kyo couldn't help making a face. What was this, elementary school? What was the guy rattling on about?
It had struck a chord with Peter though, and Danil had to work for a moment to restrain the other man. Kyo watched silently, afraid that Peter might retaliate, even if he had all the right in the world to do so.
When the family had finally disappeared into the food court area, Peter seemed to have calmed down some and ushered the rest of them towards the mini-golf area. Kyo followed suit.
"Hey, Danyaru-san, Petah-san..." Kyo coughed and cleared his throat, careful to keep his voice low enough that Mr. Muscles and his rude girlfriend wouldn't overhear if they were still nearby. "I get this feeling that Mr. Mah-sul Man is only using certain muscles and not others." He pointed to his own head. "In Japanese, we have the phrase, "Atama ga warui." Like I am stupid. Or you can just call that guy, "Baka." Like fool. He looks like a fool, right? He compares cockroaches and cock-sucking roaches. It sounds so stupid." He shrugged. "I don't understand him or all his mah-sul."

Peter laughed, ruffling Kyo's hair playfully. "You're a good kid, Kyo. Sometimes you'll find American guys like that. They spend all their time working out, lifting weights, why? It's 2008, there's no reason to be huge! Can you imagine someone walking up to him and going, 'Hey, what do you do for a living?' 'Rrrrrr.... Computer programmer! Rrrrrr!' Peter laughed.
Danil rolled his eyes, shaking his head, but he too laughed. "Don't worry about not understanding his joke, Kyo. That's a joke you don't need to learn." He patted his shoulder.
Peter sighed. "He's right. Sorry if I scared you for a bit. I was just making sure they weren't going mini-golfing too. If they were, then we weren't," he said flatly. "Come on," he said again as they finally got to the course. He pulled out his wallet at the counter. "Hi, three please-"
"Two," Danil corrected. He chuckled. "Kyo insists on paying his way."
Peter looked at Kyo, raising his eyebrows. "You sure, kiddo? You don't have to, you know." He smiled at him. "You're a good kid, Kyo. Tell you what. We'll let you pay for yourself here, if you let us treat you to Aunt Annie's."
"Sounds fair to me," Danil agreed. "What do you say, Kyo?"
"Two please," Peter said to the cashier, who smiled and nodded.
"Ten dollars," she said. "Hey, are you Danil Andropov, the skater?"
"Yes, I am," Danil replied bashfully.
"You're amazing! Is this your... partner?" she asked, gesturing to Peter.
"Peter Zemeckis, yes," Danil answered with a nod as Peter handed her a ten dollar bill.
"Cool! Hang on, I'll get your stuff."
The teenager went to retrieve the equipment, and Peter called out, "Make our balls blue!"
Danil stomped on Peter's foot, trying not to laugh.
"Ow!" he exclaimed, laughing.
The girl returned with a score sheet and pencil, a pair of putters and two balls, one of which was indeed blue. Danil saw the loook on Peter's face and squeezed his arm tightly, rolling his eyes. The other ball was purple.
"Thank you very much," Danil said with a smile as the two got their equipment.
"Nice, blue and purple-" Another hard squeeze of the arm stopped that crude joke from finishing.
"Five dollars," the teenager said to Kyo as she giggled at Peter's almost-finished joke. She'd already retrieved his club and ball, a neon orange one. "Have fun!"
"Thanks, Julianna," Danil said, upon reading her nametag.
They went over to the first hole. A stately castle stood between the golfers and their first hole, the drawbridge swinging up and down.

Kyo felt his face flush. Truth be told, while the other jokes he'd actually understood (even if it had taken a minute or two), this one he hadn't gotten at all, though he'd thought the "Rrrrr..." noise had been befitting enough for the person it had been attributed to.
"He's right. Sorry if I scared you for a bit. I was just making sure they weren't going mini-golfing too. If they were, then we weren't."
Kyo nodded. "I can understand this. Maybe it is like I said, and that lady would become tough, use the clubs on us. And then her boyfriend..." Kyo hesitated. "Ano...would it be a bad thing if I said that maybe he became so much muscle so that he can...how do you say it...nanka...make up for something else?"
By the time they got to the counter to rent the mini golf clubs and balls, Danil had already kindly explained Kyo's proposition about paying to Peter; both insisted on treating Kyo to Aunt Annie's afterward, though Kyo had to stop himself from asking who or what Annie was, and if she was really Peter or Danil's aunt. He'd find out later anyway.
And then Danil and Peter had ordered their materials, and the fun began.
"Two please," Peter was saying to the girl behind the counter, a girl who Kyo thought looked quite pleasant despite the fact that he assumed she'd been working for some time already. A lot of Japanese people, especially the younger ones with part time jobs, barely even cracked a grin while at work. He wondered if she went to his school--they looked to be about the same age....Then she spoke.
"Hey, are you Danil Andropov, the skater?"
Kyo's jaw dropped.
Dear goodness, not a single person in the entire mall had missed him, not even this girl. And even when she asked about Peter and got her answer from Danil, she didn't seem phased at all. Kyo was suddenly feeling out of place around all these cool people, the mini golf worker included. He didn't think he could be nearly as cool and confident around a celebrity upon first meeting like she had.
As the worker went into a back room somewhere to get the men's materials, Peter suddenly called out, "Make our balls blue!"
Danil retaliated by giving his husband a foot stomp, which in turn caused the other to burst into pained laughter. Kyo had to put a hand over his mouth to stop himself from snorting out loud.
In fact, despite the other stuff they'd endured already with the rather thick-headed, nasty Muscle Man and Rude Lady, they were good-natured in their ability to just forget it all. Forget it all and just laugh. Kyo really admired that. Maybe it was also that he was sure the pair went through a great deal of trouble for not only being a celebrity pair, but for being a gay couple in general. Kyo was aware that homsexuality wasn't exactly "accepted" in many cultures, certainly not in Japan yet either, and even though he didn't classify as gay, he'd never understood why other people seemed so adamant to act as though it personally affected them....
Kyo realized that though he didn't know his two host fathers yet as much as he might like--their life stories, their experiences, everything--he felt a deep sense of satisfaction and happiness seeing them happy. He wanted to always see them like that.
At that moment, the shop worker returned, smiling as before, carrying Peter's preferred color balls. Kyo bit his lip to keep from laughing again. He wanted to ask why Peter was so intrigued by blue balls, because he certainly couldn't imagine that the associated physical experience was all that pleasant.
The girl handed the two men their equipment, and they paid, though not before Peter got out another of his jokes. Kyo was still awkwardly biting his lip to keep his laughter at bay as he approached to pay. The worker seemed curious, as if wondering his relation to the two before him, but the smile hadn't left her face.
Moments later, she returned with his stuff, and he handed her his money. He realized was actually fairly self-conscious around her, at least more than he would be normally, though he figured that was largely in part because she was around his age, pretty, kinda sweet-seeming, and because she seemed to have taken quite a bit to Danil and Peter. Those were big shoes for Kyo to fill. He liked the way the girl laughed at his host father's jokes too, though it dawned on him that he'd like Peter's laugh just moments before, and he suddenly wondered if he didn't just have something like a laugh fetish.
Have fun!" she said sweetly, waving slightly.
Kyo's eyes widened a little. "Thank you," he responded, taking his supplies and change, bowing slightly to emphasize his gratitude, then hurrying off to get started with the game.
"Thanks, Julianna!"
At Danil's voice, Kyo turned back around to see that the handsome man had meant the girl behind the counter, who was suddenly beaming and blushing simultaneously. She gave a curt wave back, the smile never leaving her face.
Kyo sighed inside, then shook his head. Danil with the ladies...They must have all been pretty jealous of Peter when Danil had announced his marriage...
With those thoughts in mind, feeling slightly proud that he got to have the pair as family, Kyo was feeling pretty content.
Until they reached the first hole on the course.
Kyo's eyes widened at the sight. "Eh!? Already!? I think this must be the game for advanced players--where is the kiddie game? If I have to, I will play solo. I cannot get the ball through that castle. They want me the first try to lose the game!"
He looked at his two host fathers, both of whom were looking pretty happy about the course itself with their brand new, color-of-choice materials, then sighed. As long as they didn't mind having to hold back at points and wait for him to finish up.
"Okay, okay, here I go." Kyo got into position at the starting point of the game, trying to measure the distance and timing of the drawbridge with his sight alone. He'd never had the best aim, and maybe that was because he'd only played a few sports, never gotten into them quite as much as his music.
Squinting harder to make sure he was happy with the alignment he had, Kyo paused a moment, then swung.
The ball shot forwards, straight, veering right slightly, then straight again until.....Va-voom! It caught the drawbridge of the castle right as it was lifting back up, and the bridge itself tilted the ball up into the castle hole. Jumping up and down happily, Kyo ran around the other side of the castle, waiting to see the ball come out and how close to the hole it would land. Maybe Danil and Peter wouldn't have to wait at all!
But the ball never came.
".......Eh? Ball-san, where did you...?"
Moving back around the front of the castle again, Kyo was just in time to see the drawbridge come back down level to the playing ground, spitting out his orange mini golf ball on the way. A large pout replaced the confused "O" look on Kyo's face.
"Why did that happen?" His pout deepened. "I knew it....I was too quickly assuming. Fate does not want me to be good at golf." Watching his ball roll back some place close to the starting point, Kyo crouched down to look into the castle hole as the drawbridge went up, then came back down. Though there was light on the other side, leading to the opposite end of the first course, Kyo could see that there were also walls along the inside of the hole too. His ball had been veering to the right the way he'd hit it--if it wasn't just fate's determination to fail him--that it seemed it had bounced off the back wall of the castle and been timed perfectly enough to exit just as the drawbridge came back down.
"Danyaru-san, Petah-san...." He bowed his head. "I am sorry for my failure. There is no punishment for the loser at the end of the game, ne? Like no suspension or grounding or something like that?" He didn't really expect that kind of thing from people like Danil or Peter, but he'd known plenty of senpai (older students/people he had to look up to and obey by general Japanese custom) back in Japan who had indulged in one too many games with friends and had to do something semi-humiliating or not-so-fun whenever they lost. "Oh, and I think I also want to ask if losing means not going to visit Annie-san?"

"Kyo," Danil said, putting his arm around his exchange son, "this is only a game. Games are supposed to be fun. It doesn't matter whether you win or lose, fail or succeed, the important thing is to have fun! Don't let yourself have too much pressure. We have hours of time! Don't rush yourself, don't push yourself. Just relax! There is no punishment," he said, laughing slightly. "We'll still go to Aunt Annie's, don't worry." He grinned and gave a little hug.
"Okay, that's one stroke, Kyo, don't worry, you'll do better as we go along! I promise!" Peter exclaimed, writing on the score pad. "Next, dorogoy?" he asked, raising his eyebrows.
Danil took up his purple ball and set it down on the ground, eying the drawbridge carefully, as Kyo had. He spent about a minute or so watching, and finally tapped his putter against the ball. It rolled slowly, and the drawbridge went up just before Danil's ball got to it.
"Argh," Danil cringed as his ball got caught under the drawbridge itself, but laughed at himself, looking at Kyo. "See? Already, I'm doing worse than you!" He laughed, trying to make Kyo feel better.
Peter snorted, noting the stroke in the score pad.
"Move aside, amateurs! Time for a real pro!" he proclaimed, handing the pad and pencil to Danil. He took his ball and took the "classic professional golfer position." He almost tapped the ball a few times, swinging farther back each time, and finally swinging his club high behind him, and slamming the club into the ball... which promptly went up in the air and bounced off of one of the castle turrets, flying out of sight.
"And, ah, what professional is that? I don't see one," Danil said with a hearty laugh.

Danil seemed suddenly serious. "Kyo," he said softly, putting an arm around Kyo's shoulders. "This is only a game. Games are supposed to be fun. It doesn't matter whether you win or lose, fail or succeed, the important thing is to have fun! Don't let yourself have too much pressure. We have hours of time! Don't rush yourself, don't push yourself. Just relax! There is no punishment."
Kyo nodded, understanding. He considered telling Danil and Peter the reason for his words but refrained. There were some aspects of Japanese culture that were probably a great deal different from American culture, and while he was certainly proud of his home country, those were maybe also things he didn't want to bring up. Anyway, it hardly mattered--those games his senpai played were probably irrelevant to the kind he would play with Danil and Peter. They didn't seem the type to fool around in that kind of way.
"We'll still go to Aunt Annie's, don't worry."
"Okay," he responded, nodding once more and accepting Danil's hug. "I do not want to disappoint Aunt Annie."
Peter marked down Kyo's score and ushered Danil to go next. Truth be told, Kyo was eager to see how his host father would play. He was already, in a strong sense, an artist and a sportsman, so he imagined the man would be very good. Eager to get comfortable, Kyo stepped just off the playing field and set his club straight up off the ground, leaning on it for extra support while watching.
Danil was very meticulous in his game setup, he looked as much the professional as Kyo saw him to be, though the ball just missed the drawbridge's upwards trek by a matter of milliseconds. Still, Kyo guessed that had the ball gone through, it would have come very very close to the hole on the other side.
Poor Danil laughed at the error, but turned to Kyo, grinning. "See? Already, I'm doing worse than you!"
"Actually, I think that the game is determined to beat the players," Kyo mused aloud, laughing slightly. "Anyway, my ball is also stuck at the beginning...not even a step away from where I started off."
Peter seemed amused too. Handing the score sheet and pencil to Danil, he moved forwards to take his turn, adopting a professional looking golfing pose and even taking a few pro-looking practice swings. Kyo straightened up a little bit, eager to see what would happen, watching Peter's ball carefully, when WHOOP!--he hit it, it bounced off the plastic castle, and then it disappeared from sight.
There was an almost perfectly timed comedic pause, and then Kyo couldn't help himself--he burst into laughter. Perhaps at the sight of his caretakers' faces. Danil looked beyond amused.
"And, ah, what professional is that? I don't see one."
Kyo was no resorting to putting all his weight on his golf club to hold himself up, and when that didn't work and he went down hard onto the golf course ground itself, he was still laughing. He didn't want to make Peter feel bad about it at all--he certainly was far from an expert himself--but the manner in which everything had happened.....
Still clutching his gut with laughter, Kyo stopped kicking for a moment and tried to get out his next words in the most understandable manner possible in between bouts of laughter. "Petah....Petah-san--" He had to take a moment. "I....hahaha, I hope it will not seem so mean of me or that I am happy you had this misfortune. I promise....hahahaha....I promise I am.......Yada!" Kyo had to fight off another giggle fit hard to even attempt to keep going. "....it is just, it is like a scene from a Disney cartoon. You are a comedian, Petah-san. Handsome, but comedian too. Maybe we are twins, we are both so bad at this game."

Peter laughed, shaking his head as he went off to find his ball. Danil continued laughing, and helped Kyo up. "Are you okay?" he asked, trying to stifle his laughter now. He looked after Peter, who was hunting at the hole adjacent to them. It had a ferris wheel, with several cars on it. The object was to get your ball beneath the ferris wheel. Peter's ball was in one of the cars.
"Oh, fuck," he said quietly, and reached for his ball. Before he could grab it, it revolved away from him. "Aw, man!" He sighed, waiting for the ferris wheel to come back up to him. Once it did, he grabbed his ball and returned to the others.
Danil laughed, shaking his head. "You know, Peter, you really shouldn't have picked it up. That's cheating. You should have hit it back to us."
"It was on a car in the ferris wheel!" Peter protested. "How the hell was I supposed to hit it when it was on that thing?"
Danil shrugged, but marked his stroke in the book.
"Hey!" Peter exclaimed. "That's not fair!"
"Did you hit the ball?" Danil asked.
"Yeah..." Peter's voice trailed off.
"Did it go anywhere?"
"Yeah..." he repeated.
"Then it's a stroke!" Danil exclaimed, slapping his husband's shoulder. "It's your turn, Kyosan," he said with a loving smile.

Kyo stifled more giggles as Peter went off to find his ball and Danil helped him to his feet. The latter was in a laughing fit of his own, though he seemed legitimately concerned about Kyo's state of being. Kyo momentarily wondered if it was possible to die from laughing too much, and if so, if he even really minded that so much.
"Are you okay?" Danil asked.
Kyo nodded, snorting one last time before managing to regain his composure. "It is too good. I feel like it is not even the same day..."
He'd barely finished speaking before one of his other host father's expletives came out of nowhere. Kyo turned quickly to see Peter battling with a ferris wheel obstacle further in the golf course for his golf ball. He'd apparently just missed pulling it off the miniature ride before the small wheel went into another rotation.
"Aw, man!"
Danil laughed again, which spurred Kyo into another small round of giggles. "You know, Peter, you really shouldn't have picked it up. That's cheating. You should have hit it back to us."
"It was on a car in the ferris wheel! How the hell was I supposed to hit it when it was on that thing?"
As another family of golfers rounded the corner, Danil shrugged and added a stroke next to Peter's name in his book. Peter noticed and instantly retaliated.
"Hey! That's not fair!"
"Did you hit the ball?" Danil inquired.
"Yeah..."
"Did it go anywhere?"
"Yeah..."
"Then it's a stroke!"
Kyo clapped a hand over his mouth and put his free arm over his stomach. He was laughing so hard now that if he didn't end up on the floor like last time, he was sure to bust a gut.
"It's your turn, Kyosan," Danil finally added, smiling.
"Hai! Yes!"
Happy for the distraction, but still emitting small chuckles as he moved, Kyo headed back to the location of his golf ball, a.k.a. the very place he'd started from, and took position. He'd never been the best golfer, but watching that darned drawbridge move up and down, he wondered if maybe they were all over-playing this one. It might mean one or two extra strokes, but maybe the way to do things was get the ball as far as the drawbridge, wait until the next turn, then swing directly through it.
But Kyo didn't feel quite so patient as to test that theory out. He closed his eyes and swung.
He heard another thunk!, guessed the ball had gone through the hole in the castle wall, and painfully imagined it hitting the other side again only to be spat back at him.
It was going to be there. The ball was going to have ended up right in front of his feet again.
He opened his eyes.
But there was no ball in sight.
Kyo did a double-take.
"Really? It really went in?" A bit disbelieving, Kyo darted around the castle obstacle, a big smile crossing his face as the orange ball made its grand appearance on the opposite side of the course start.
"Kita, kitaaaaaa!" (It came, it came!) Kyo watched the ball roll off a bit further on the green, coming to a stop still a considerable ways from the hole itself, but at the very least on the other side.
He snickered slightly, his competitive side suddenly firing up as he imagined Peter's previous gameplay. "Petah-san," he called slyly. "Maybe if you again hit it so hard, there will be good luck. Maybe it will fly over castle, hit mine into the hole, and come back to you through the hole in the castle wall."
Kyo giggled mischievously.

Danil laughed at Kyo's joke, clapping as he made his way over to his own ball, under the drawbridge. He handed the book to Peter.
"You see? You did fine!" he said to him with a broad grin. "Now it's my turn..." His expression turned to one of concentration and seriousness. What could he do to get himself out of this... He looked around the area, to see if his ball could bounce off of anything if he hit it... There was nothing except a pole on either side of the entrance to the green. Danil nodded thoughtfully, stroking his chin. Instead of focusing on his ball, which was still enduring the drawbridge going on top of it, he focused on the poles.
Anyone who was good at geometry could figure out angles. If Danil hit the ball, standing from a specific angle, the ball would then be hit at a specific angle and bounce off the pole at a specific angle... If he could hit it with the right amount of force, the ball could very well make its way back to the drawbridge, and if he did it at the right time, the ball would be carried to the other side where it would join Kyo's. Danil kept nodding his head thoughtfully, concentrating. He changed his stance at the ball, moving to the other side. He waited until the drawbridge was about to come down again and slammed the putter into the ball.
The ball rolled along directly to one of the poles, and ricocheted off of it, coming straight for the drawbridge. By this time, it had come down twice and was about to come down again. Danil's plan worked perfectly: the ball made it to the drawbridge, and the drawbridge carried it as it went up again. The ball rolled down and Danil went to meet it on the other side. He cheered, pumping his fist in the air as the ball made its way over to the hole... and sank in.
"Cheater," Peter mused, marking the stroke in the book. Danil went over to him.
"Peter," he said coyly, "that was only one stroke."
"Yeah, but the pole hit it, so that makes it two," Peter proclaimed.
"That doesn't count, Peter, and you know it," Danil pointed out, nudging him playfully. "The pole is not my putter. It may have hit something, but just because it bounced off doesn't make it a stroke. Or if it does, then I'll have to make another stroke for you, becaure your ball bounced off the castle." He wore a wry smile and folded his arms across his chest. Peter's face blanched, and he cleared his throat as he nodded and corrected the number.
"You win," he mused.
"You're damn right I do," Danil said with a snicker. He went back over to Kyo. "He'll do that sometimes, fudge the results to make them in his favor." He grinned. "That's why I went over, to make sure he didn't." He chuckled. "Now, Peter, remember, you start from the very beginning," he called to him, perhaps a little too loudly, just to taunt his husband further. "I like to push his buttons sometimes," Danil said with a snicker to Kyo.
"Yeah, yeah!" Peter replied with an exasporated sigh. He hit his ball, and this time it went right to the drawbridge... and stopped just short of it. He sighed. "Your turn, Kyo," he called to him.

Kyo watched Danil thoughtfully as he stepped up to take his turn. He seemed to be measuring something out, and in doing so, he looked very much like the professional players Kyo saw on TV. He didn't know how good his host father was at the real sport, not its miniature counterpart, but he imagined he would be just as popular playing that as he was with skating.
There was a loud thonk sound as the club met the ball, Danil had swung at last, and Kyo watched wide-eyed as the ball rocketed off. He only realized what Danil had set up after it had been done.
The Japanese student put on a fake pout as the ball rolled into the hole. "Danyaru-san...sometimes I think there is the God of Luck watching over you. Maybe only you. He does not like Petah-san and me." He turned to Peter, trying hard to keep from laughing again, he was so amused by the other man's evident annoyance.
"Maybe we should set up a fence with these balls." He gestured to his and Peter's. "Then Danyaru-san's can never go through, only hit ours into the hole."
He mimed swinging the ball and getting a hole-in, then laughed again. That really had been quite impressive indeed, Danil's technique. His timing had to have been spot-on to make that work as well as it did. This was going be a tricky game to win!
"Cheater," replied Peter.
"Peter, that was only one stroke."
"Yeah, but the pole hit it, so that makes it two."
Kyo watched his host fathers go off again about the game play and smiled. They were a pretty competive bunch, and he was having fun playing against them, but the nice part about it all was that they seemed to do it out of pure enjoyment. While some couples might actually have taken issue with one or the other member doing better in a sport or game or the like, Danil and Peter were like the kind of couple you saw in TV sitcoms. The kind that joke around and might batter each other a verbal storm but still knew how to laugh it off and appreciate each other at the end of the day. It was endearing, to say the least.
"You win," said Peter.
"You're damn right I do," Danil replied, snickering. He turned back to Kyo. a snicker. "He'll do that sometimes, fudge the results to make them in his favor. That's why I went over, to make sure he didn't. Now, Peter, remember, you start from the very beginning."
Kyo grinned. That had been quite loud...
"I like to push his buttons sometimes," Danil explained.
Once Peter had finished, Kyo stepped up to where his ball had landed and took position, trying to estimate how much of an angle the ball would have to hit the back wall on in order to get into the hole. With the way the ball was positioned, quite close to the wall and leaving very little room for a right-handed player to swing, Kyo got the impression he wouldn't make the shot without using the back wall. It was already something of a challenge...
Sticking his tongue out in careful concentration, Kyo shifted his position so that he had enough room to swing, aimed for a nice 90 degree angle off the wall and the hole, then swung. The ball skidded forward.
It rolled and rolled and rolled before making a light thunk sound against the back wall, bouncing off, and rolling nearly perfectly into the hole as though drawn there by a magnet.
Kyo didn't even cheer, though he was of course happy. Instead, he turned Peter's way, narrowing his eyes and giving him the most mischievous look he could muster. He was having too much fun here. "I change my mind. Maybe I will work hard and make sure both of you have no choice but to hit my ball into the hole next time. Mwahaha."
